Amazon Is Aware Of Sustainability

Amazon launched a new in-house sustainability brand, Aware, to provide everyday essentials to consumers. All Amazon Aware products are certified carbon neutral and have received third-party certifications, part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program.

Amazon Aware products include apparel, home, beauty, household, and other essentials.

They’re certified carbon neutral because emissions from their production, materials, distribution, and end of life have either been eliminated, reduced, or offset with carbon credits.

The products’ carbon footprint is calculated by an external certifier ClimatePartner using GHG Protocol.

“People want to shop more consciously, and at Amazon, we know we can make that easier,” noted the online giant in a statement. “We launched the Climate Pledge Friendly program in 2020 as a way to help customers discover products that are more sustainable on Amazon, and today, we’re introducing Amazon Aware—a new line of everyday essentials, all with third-party certifications featured in our Climate Pledge Friendly program.”

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly platform recognizes products with improvement in at least one area of sustainability. In addition to creating its certification, Compact by Design, Amazon has partnered with over two dozen third-party certifications. Those include governmental agencies, independent laboratories, and nonprofits.

Certification partners include Bluesign, Certified Carbonfree, Certified Carbon Neutral, Certified Animal Welfare approved, Climate Neutral by ClimatePartners, Fairtrade, Global Recycled Standard, Organic Content Standard 100, Rainforest Alliance, Recycled Claim Standard 100, USDA Organic, and well as many others.

“We are committed to creating programs that contribute toward a more sustainable future,” said Matt Taddy, vice president of Amazon Private Brands. “We are excited to introduce Amazon Aware, as it’s another step that continues in our commitment to test, learn, and innovate, while offering low-priced, everyday essentials to our customers, all with third-party certifications featured in our Climate Pledge Friendly program.”

Products of the Amazon Aware brand are available for customers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. They include dresses, T-shirts, tops, sweatshirts, jackets, bedding, towels, face, and body beauty products, home essentials, and collections of organic, recycled, or lounge materials.

Its beauty products are tested by dermatologists and use healthy ingredients such as vitamin C or avocado oil. Its packaging eliminates single-use plastics and instead uses materials such as aluminum and glass.

Bedding and bath products use certified organic cotton made with processes that reduce environmental impact and promote a socially responsible working environment. Clothing is made out of recycled and other green materials certified by various third parties.

Amazon has set a goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.
